Great Backyard Bird Count

2009 Kane County Results

This year's count, co-sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, took place on the weekend of February 13th - 16th. Birders throughout the country were asked to submit checklists of all the birds they came across over the weekend period. In Kane County, more checklists were submitted this year (149 as opposed to 108 last year), resulting in substantial increases in both the number of species and number of birds, from 53 to 70 and from 5,046 to 10,735, respectively.

Elgin's bird counters substantially outpaced those in other Kane County communities with most birds (3,701), most species (44), and most checklists (41).

Statewide, more than 190,000 birds comprised of 141 species were counted. More than 2,100 checklists were submitted.

Three extraordinarily rare birds were reported in the county this year: a Townsend's Solitaire in Maple Park; a Hoary Redpoll in St. Charles; and a Northern Saw-whet Owl in Batavia. A Pileated Woodpecker, reported in Carpentersville, is also an extremely rare sighting in Kane County.

Below is an accounting of the results from communities that fall wholly or partially within Kane County.

Twenty communities submitted checklists; Algonquin (ALG); Aurora (AUR); Barrington Hills (BH); Bartlett (BAR); Batavia (BAT); Big Rock (BR); Carpentersville (CAR); Dundee (DUN); Elburn (ELB); Elgin (ELG); Geneva (GEN); Gilberts (GIL); Huntley (HUN); Kaneville (KAN); Lily Lake (LL); Maple Park (MP); Montgomery (MON); North Aurora (NA); Saint Charles (STC); Sugar Grove (SUG). Three lists were submitted for West Dundee, 1 for East Dundee, and 17 for Dundee; they were all combined as Dundee.
