From the Desk of the President
It's April, but it sure doesn't feel like it - rain/snow and cold temperatures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In spite of the weather the northern migration is still on. The first Yellow-rumped Warbler of the year was recently reported. As everyone knows by now, the White Pelicans have returned at least a week earlier than last year. At one time over 300 of the magnificent birds were counted. If you tried to get on the observation platform on the past weekends, you not only had trouble getting on the observation platform, but you had trouble parking your car. The first Saturday of this month is our annual Scope Day at Nelson's Lake - and with the White Pelicans out there, it should be very impressive. The number and diversity of ducks on the lake will also make nonbirders smile in amazement at the gift sitting there on the water. Tell your nonbirding friends and those that are birders but don't get out, about Scope Day and invite them to the show. At our meeting on the 8th, we will hear about how to identify those confusing shorebirds by our own Bob Montgomery. Bob has spent many years looking at them, and is a excellent teacher, so we can all learn something. Three great Saturday field trips (to Sauer Farm, Elsen's Hill, and Oakhurst) promise to be exciting trips as the migration takes off in full swing. The WARBLERS WILL SOON BE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take the time to get out - each day promises to show us something different in the bird world. Good birding, |
